A Concert Hall in Your Pocket?

Are you, in fact, in violation of federal copyright laws anytime you receive a phone call? That was the argument put forth by the music industry.  Plaintiff in this case, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), alleged in the suit against AT&T and Verizon (defendants) that when your phone rings it is a "mini concert hall" to those around you - claiming that mobile phone carriers were "publicly performing" the copyrighted song, and as such royalties must be paid to the owners of the song for its use.  Read More »
